DW Stewart recorded this pattern in 'Old and Rare Scottish Tartans' from a relic. James Scarlett MBE explains that it was a waistcoat given to Prince Charles Edward Stuart by MacDonald of Kingsbrugh. Too bright for his use, the Bonnie Prince exchanged it with one Malcolm Macleod of Macleod who, before his capture by Government forces, hid it in a rock cleft. After his release a year later he retrieved it but only a small scrap had survived undamaged. It was eventually preserved in the Advocates' Library in Edinburgh.
